In the majority of Latin America, the consumption of electricity tends to follow in step with the health of the economy. Cepal sees regional economies contracting 0.3% this year, with an expansion of about 0.7% next year.

Despite this, the electricity business is long term and in the vast majority of countries there is the expectation that power growth will bounce back strongly. Renewable energy especially is growing on the back of dropping costs in new projects.

The BNamericas report describes in detail what is happening in the revolution of renewable energy in Latin America, where this year auctions have seen solar and wind power win bids with historically low prices.

Despite the advance of renewables, Latin America continues to be a hydro-dependent region. This report reveals which countries are going ahead with mega hydro projects, as well as mini and other hydroelectric projects.
