About Root Foods, Inc. (dba Bumbleroot Foods)
Bumbleroot dreams up and creates delicious and healthy food and beverages featuring unique and sustainably-sourced ingredients from around the world in the most eco-friendly packaging available. Our first product – Bumbleroot Superfood Hydration Drink Mix – aims to create a larger market for the African superfruit Baobab which is harvested by low-income communities in some of the poorest and most drought prone areas in Africa. We incorporate impact into every aspect of our supply chain.
Bumbleroot sells through a direct-to-consumer model (online), which allows us to tell the stories of our unique ingredients and the harvesters and farmers who are our suppliers. This model also lets us quickly iterate on our products and to communicate directly with our customers (which we love!). And the margins are higher than selling through more traditional wholesale channels.
In addition to our drink mixes, we are also currently selling our 100% Organic Baobab Powder. This powder is the easiest way to get the nutritional benefits of the Baobab fruit.
About the owner
A Montana native, Sara founded Bumbleroot to provide delicious, unique, and nutritious food products to US consumers and to create income opportunities for the farmers and harvesters who supply the ingredients. Her previous experience includes consulting for the NGO TechnoServe, developing emerging market strategy for a large-risk management firm, and serving as a policy advisor to U.S. Senator Max Baucus and the U.S. Senate Finance Committee on international trade and agriculture issues. She holds both a bachelor’s degree and Masters of Business Administration from the University of Notre Dame.
In Zimbabwe, Sara designed systems to integrate smallholder farmers into the agriculture value chain. Smallholder farmers were willing to work, but lacked access to markets, financing, and training. While in Zimbabwe, she learned about unique foods with fantastic nutritional profiles that grew naturally in many areas of the country. Sara started Bumbleroot to provide a way to connect these farmers to consumers in developed markets, thereby increasing incomes and a paving a better life for the farmers while offering healthier and better tasting beverage and snack food choices to consumers.
Sara believes that by engaging in a dialogue about sustainable food systems and providing delicious, nutritious products, consumers will opt for a fair and sustainable food system by way of their food purchases.
Our 100% Organic Baobab powder is the easiest way to take advantage of the nutritional benefits of the Baobab fruit.
Baobab is a superfruit that has great things, like antioxidants, dietary fiber, vitamin C, vitamin B, calcium, magnesium, and potassium. The fruit – a big, coconut looking thing – comes from Africa’s picturesque baobab tree, known as the “Tree of Life.
One serving (about 2 tablespoons) contains 24% of your daily recommended dietary fiber and 25% of the daily recommended Vitamin C.
And if that wasn’t enough, the fiber in the Baobab fruit pulp acts as a prebiotic – helping your gut grow its good bacteria so that you can better absorb nutrients.
And it’s extremely alkaline with a PRAL value of -52.
Its tangy and slightly sweet taste works well in smoothies, tomato sauce, desserts, and many other foods. Check out the Bumbleroot Blog for recipes.
