THE COLORADO is a feature documentary that is both narrated and sung, a live performance, and a comprehensive educational resource. It explores the Colorado River Basin from a holistic perspective and places the ecological predicaments of the region in a rich social and historical context. An extraordinary group of people—Pulitzer, Grammy and Emmy laureates among them—has been working towards the realization of this project for the past four years. Now the filming is finished, music is composed and recorded, and the educational resource—a full-length textbook—is 60% complete. PLEASE HELP US WITH THE FINAL PUSH! Your generous contributions will go towards post-production expenses (400 hours of editing, motion graphics, sound design, color correction) as well as licensing fees and reproduction costs of archival materials. If we exceed our goal, we will use the additional funds towards building an online platform for our educational resources and for festival participation.
The Colorado River has carved some of the most majestic landscapes on the planet for five million years, and its delta as a lush wetland is within living memory. Today, with a booming agricultural industry to support and nearly forty million people in a half-dozen major cities dependent on its waters, the Colorado is overused, over-promised, and unable even to reach its delta.
We believe that effective stewardship of land and water begins with love and knowledge and continues with dedicated activism. We have designed THE COLORADO to inspire the love, instill the knowledge, and encourage the activism.
Narrated by the Oscar-nominee Mark Rylance, THE COLORADO explores topics ranging from the prehistoric settlements of the region to the current plight of the river’s delta region. Other sections cover crucial facets of the river’s history, such as the period of European exploration, the dam-building era and its legacy, industrial agriculture and immigration, as well as the impact of climate change on the region.
The music of THE COLORADO is composed by five critically acclaimed composers: John Luther Adams (2015 Pulitzer & Grammy laureate), William Brittelle, Glenn Kotche, Paola Prestini and Shara Worden. It is performed by the Grammy-laureate vocal ensemble Roomful of Teeth, the percussionist Glenn Kotche (Wilco) and the cellist Jeffrey Zeigler (Kronos Quartet).
THE COLORADO has been filmed by Murat Eyuboglu and the twice-Primetime Emmy-laureate Sylvestre Campe in over four years in the high mountains of Wyoming and Colorado, in the wetlands and mudflats of Baja California, Mexico and in many other extraordinary locations in between.
