So what does the future of payment processing look like? Read on to find out.

The next time that you and your jam-packed shopping cart are waiting in the checkout line at a Target or a Walmart, or you’re waiting to order your latte at Starbucks, take a minute (we’re willing to bet you’ll probably have several on your hands) to think about how much money these locations handle on a day-to-day basis.

But you wouldn’t know it at the checkout counter, because when it comes to their point-of-sale (POS) technology, most brick-and-mortar brands are stuck in the 1990s.

We’re not talking just about your mom-and-pop shops, either (although don’t get us wrong, they could do with an upgrade, too) — we’re talking about major national brands with names like Macy’s, Nordstrom, Walmart, Target, Home Depot and Lowes. Together, these companies and companies like them process trillions of dollars in sales each year, and they do it all using systems that haven’t undergone a meaningful redesign in decades.

While brick-and-mortar merchants of all shapes and sizes are making due with outdated POS technology — or, at best making incremental improvements like adding self check-out, which provides the feeling of a next-gen POS solution but ultimately relies on the same outdated technology — the payments industry is moving on without them. Apple, Google, Samsung and Microsoft are all introducing mobile payment solutions that give users the ability to pay for their purchases directly through their smartphones and other devices. Innovations like consumer-presented barcodes and merchant-presented QR codes are emerging as promising new technologies for securely authenticating purchases as they’re happening. And the EMV — a group consisting of Europay, Mastercard and Visa — has introduced new standards for their cards, which merchants everywhere are having to scramble to accommodate.

It’s time for a new approach to payment processing. It’s time for Vilogix.

Let’s talk about the 600-pound gorilla in the room: let’s talk about Square.

Square is the undisputed public darling when it comes to payments. Maybe you’ve heard of them: they just announced a filing for a $275 million IPO. Square’s founder, Jack Dorsey, also founded another tech “startup” you may have heard of: Twitter.

Square has built a billion-dollar business on the strength of a solution that’s perfect for their target audience of taxis, taco trucks and local retail shops.

But here’s the thing, Square has done an exceptional job providing solutions for small merchants, Tier 1 brick-and-mortar brands (the Targets and Home Depots of the world) need more firepower from their POS systems.
